At the retirement of Fr. James Flynn, Friar Thomas Martín Jackson, O.P. was assigned to Holy Name of Mary Parish in 2012. A member of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), Fr. Tom holds a B.A. in Social Studies (History and Sociology), an M.A. in Systematic Theology, and an M.Div. in Pastoral Studies; he also did graduate liturgical studies at Sant Anselmo in Rome.
Fr. Tom is keenly aware of the necessity of every group of God's People bringing their full gift of self to serve the Gospel. He brings to Holy Name of Mary the gift of being solidly rooted in African American Catholic culture--and ministerial experience in multicultural contexts. He has served as a Catholic educator, itinerant preacher, retreat director, university campus minister, hospital chaplain, and parish priest across the USA. He has also ministered in multicultural contexts here in the United States, Mexico, and Italy.
Having been trained as a foreign missioner, Fr. Tom understands God's call for all Christians to "dream new dreams". Since arriving as pastor of Holy Name of Mary he has urged members to heed God's call to "Renew My Church." In 2014-15, using the parish's 75th Anniversary as a spring board, parish members and friends of Holy Name of Mary were encouraged to engage in both the physical and spiritual components of the call to renewal.
To the greater glory of God, our dream at Holy Name of Mary is to utilize all our parish facilities to build up the spiritual life of the parish through greater youth and young adult ministry opportunities, retreats for married couples and others, and elder/senior day time offerings. To this end, in 2013-2014 the Parish Church was fully renovated; in 2015-2016 attention focused on renovating the OSP Ministry Center (former convent) to better serve the parish's spiritual needs; and, by God's grace, 2017-2018 will see the OSP Center (parish hall) renewed to better serve the needs of parish groups and the broader Morgan Park community.
We invite all present parishioners, former members, alumni of Holy Name of Mary School, neighboting churches, and our neighbors in Morgan Park to join us in this renewal effort. Our worship is the center of our renewal. Consider joining us for Mass on Saturday at 4:00PM and/or Sunday at 10:00AM! Be renewed in the Spirit!
